Gauchos Rally Late to Break Tie, Take Game Two

Bakersfield, Calif. – Seventeenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and breaking a pitcher's dual wide open en route to a 9-1 win over CSU Bakersfield in game two of a three game series at Hardt Field. The Gauchos clinched a series win over the Roadrunners, with one game remaining in the series.

Bakersfield took an early 1-0 lead, when AJ Miller and James Bell strung together two-out hits. Miller started the rally with his 16th double of the season and Bell drove him home singling right back through the box on the first pitch he saw from UCSB starter Mike Gutierrez. Both Bell and Miller finished with two hits to lead a CSUB attack that managed just five on the night. Bailey Seeger also doubled with two outs in the second.

Benji Caggianelli was excellent through his first five innings of work, allowing just six hits and an earned run without surrendering a base on balls and striking out six. He faltered to open the sixth walking the first two Gaucho's he faced in the frame before exiting. UCSB scored four in the inning and three more in the seventh to pull away from the 'Runners.

Gutierrez did not allow another hit following Seeger's second inning single, improving to 8-1 on the season after yielding just four base runners and fanning seven.

UCSB improved to 42-12 overall and 26-3 in Big West play, while CSUB fell to 18-33 and 11-18 on the season.

How It Happened...
B1 | With two outs AJ Miller doubled sharply into the left-centerfield gap and scored one batter later, on a James Bell RBI single up the middle to give CSUB an early lead.

T2 | The Gauchos answered immediately when they loaded the bases in the top of the second inning but managed just one run on a Jordan Sprinkle infield single. CSUB starter Benji Caggianelli responded with a strikeout and a fly ball to end the threat.

T6 | UCSB opened the sixth inning with four consecutive walks and all four would come around to score to give the Gauchos a 5-1 lead. The fourth walk drove in the first, before Jason Willow struck the big blow with a two-run single through the left-side. Blake Klassen drove in the innings final run with a ground out over the pitcher's mound to CSUB shortstop Aaron Casillas.

T7 | Three more Gauchos crossed the plate in the seventh, with John Newman Jr. and Sprinkle hitting RBI singles and Nick Oakley adding a sacrifice fly.

T8 | Pinch hitter Broc Mortensen hit a solo home run in the eight to stretch the UCSB lead to 9-1. It was Mortensen's 14th home run of the season.

B9 | James Bell singled in the ninth to drive in his second run of the game, scoring Jashia Morrissey who had walked with two outs.

On Deck...
