Miller Matches Home Run Mark; Bakersfield Drops Finale

Bakersfield, Calif. – AJ Miller belted his 12th home run of the season, matching the CSU Bakersfield single-season school record in a 14-6 loss to #17 UC Santa Barbara in the 2022 regular season finale in front of a crowd of 691 at Hardt Field, Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners finished the season with an 18-34 overall record with an 11-19 mark in Big West Conference action.

Miller belted a two-out solo-home run in the fourth inning to match Martin Medina's single-season record of 12 home runs, initially set in 2010. Ten of Miller's home runs came in Big West Play.

Aaron Casillas was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, finishing the season with 15 two-baggers after hitting just five in his first two seasons. Jashia Morrissey had three hits and James Bell added two.

How It Happened...
T1 | UCSB grabbed an early lead when Bryce Willits' pop up over third base found the grass for a lead-off double. Willits would score two batters later, on Christian Kirtley's sacrifice fly. CSUB starter Adrian Santa Cruz responded with strikeouts of Kyle Johnson and Broc Mortensen to end the threat.

B1 | Aaron Casillas and James Bell each doubled in the first inning, with Bell driving in Casillas from third base to even the score at one run apiece.

T3 | Broc Mortensen roped a one-out double into left-center to clear the bases and plate three Gaucho runs. Mortensen would score two batters later when Zander Darby singled through the left side to make it 5-1.

B3 | AJ Miller's solo home run drew CSUB back within three at 5-2.

B4 | Bailey Seeger led off the fourth inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts before scoring on a Ryan Gallagher wild pitch.

T5 | Designated hitter Christian Kirtley gave UCSB an insurance run with a towering solo-home run to straightaway left.

T6 | Willits doubled in LeTrey McCollum in the sixth to make it 7-3 UCSB. McCollum had reached earlier in the frame on a double of his own.

T7 | Pinch hitter John Newman Jr. came off the bench to make it 8-3 when he dribbled an IF single pass the pitcher's mound to score Mortensen.

B7 | The 'Runners scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Casillas and a subsequent single off the bat of Jashia Morrissey.

T8 | Nick Vogt doubled to lead off the eighth and scored on an RBI ground ball. Mortensen added a solo home run with two outs, his second long ball of the series to make it 10-5. McCollum, pinch hitter Gianni Bloom and Vogt would all go on to add run-scoring singles in the frame.

B8 | CSUB got one back in the eighth when Nick Salas beat out a would-be double play ball and allowed Bailey Seeger to score through the back door.
