ROADRUNNER GAME NOTES

Last Time Out
Senior Katie Williams scored a game–high 26 points as the Roadrunners picked up their first victory over a Pac–10 member program on Tuesday, beating the Oregon State Beavers, 57–54, in the Icardo Center. CSUB forced 31 Beaver turnovers, converting them into 32 points. Senior Phynique Allen added 11 points while freshman Amber Williams scored 10. Despite never trailing the entire second half, the Roadrunners were never comfortable as OSU tied the game with 3:26 remaining. But the Beavers would not score the rest of the way as Allen hit a layup and Amber Williams hit a free throw to give the game to the 'Runners.

Pac–10 Woes No More
With Tuesday's victory over Oregon State, the Roadrunners picked up their first win over a Pac–10 opponent. CSUB is now 1–3 all–time against the BCS conference members. Women's basketball now joins men's soccer and wrestling as the only two CSUB programs to defeat a Pac–10 opponent.

Pesky Anteaters
A fast UC Irvine start almost led the an upset at the Icardo Center the last time these two programs met back on Nov. 23, 2009. The Anteaters jumped out to an early seven–point first–half lead before CSUB eventually took the lead late in the half and held it through the second. Irvine would stick around, however, and shaved the Roadrunner lead down to one point midway through the second half. UCI would score seven of the game's final nine points but Katie Williams' free throws with six second remaining gave CSUB a 77–72 lead and iced the game. Lauren Spinazze hit a three as time expired. Phynique Allen led the way with 27 points. Irvine's Kim Barnes had 20 points while hitting eight of her 15 shot attempts (53.3 percent).

Turn What Overs
With 23 games completed this season, CSUB remains one of the nation's best in terms of turnover margin. The Roadrunners have held a positive turnover margin in every game this season and forced at least 20 opponent turnovers in every game except two (14, at USC – Dec. 20, 2009) (18, vs. Cal Poly – Jan. 30, 2010).

Record (Tie) Breaker
Katie Williams tallied four steals on Tuesday to tie the single–season steals mark of 91. The record is also shared by Audrie Magdaleno who compiled 91 steals during the inaugural 2000–01 season. Williams is among the nation's defensive leaders, boasting an impressive 4.0 steals per outing.

A Fresh Record
The lone true freshman on this season's squad, Amber Williams, has certainly proven to her teammates that she belongs on the court. Against Cal State Northridge (1–11–10), Williams set a Roadrunner program record with eight three pointers, besting Gillian Lillich's 2003 total of seven. The freshman has emerged as the team's third–leading scorer (9.9).

Holding 60
CSUB is an impressive 85–0 all time record when holding opponents under 60 points.

    Opponent    Date    Score    H/A/N
    Utah Valley    Dec. 9, 2009    78–36    Home
    Delaware State    Dec. 19, 2009    74–37    Neutral
    Miami (Ohio)    Dec. 22, 2009    76–56    Home
    Seattle    Jan. 16, 2010    65–47    Home
    Oregon State    Feb. 2, 2010    57–54    Home

The 36 points allowed to Utah Valley is a program record. Last season, the Roadrunners held seven opponents under 60 points.

From Deep
The Roadrunners have shown they have a knack for hitting the long–range shot this season. In fact, the CSUB record book has been updated twice this season for team three–point field goal makes already. The 15 long–distance bombs against Hawaii (11–21–09) lifted the 'Runners to a 105–75 victory. While the Roadrunners bested that mark against UC Davis (1–18–10) with 16 makes from deep, the outcome did not fall in CSUB's favor, falling to the Aggies, 79–76.

Tarver Cements Legacy
Senior Kelley Tarver made her 115th career appearance against Oregon State on Feb. 2, which ties the program–record for career games played. Former CSUB great Krista Arase made 115 appearances for the Roadrunners from 2005–2009, starting every contest. Tarver is scheduled to break Arase's careerstarts record on Feb. 20, at Seattle University.

The Starters Are...
Seniors Kelley Tarver, Phynique Allen, Katie Williams and junior Tamiko Davis have started every contest this season for the Roadrunners. Junior Nikki Leon has made four starts while senior Tiffany Belt has started nine times. Recently, freshman Amber Williams has moved her way into the starting slate, making starts in 10 of the past 11 games.

Knock on Wood
Last year marked the fourth season in program history that the Roadrunners did not play an overtime contest. All–time, CSUB is 5–3 in overtime contests. The last CSUB game that required extra time took place back on Dec. 28, 2007, when the Roadrunners fell at Loyola Marymount, 95–90, in double overtime.

The Future Signs
CSUB has signed three incoming freshmen for the 2010–11 season. The fall recruiting class includes Madison McKenney of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Tyonna Outland of Lynwood High School and Marilyn Naderhoff of West Hills High School.

Plenty of Points
The 105–point effort against Hawaii was CSUB's first 100-plus point performance since Feb. 10, 2007, against Cal State Stanislaus. This also marked the first time that the Roadrunners have surpassed the 100–point barrier against an NCAA Division I opponent.

200 Achieved
With its Dec. 22 victory over Miami, CSUB secured its 200th all–time victory in just 273 total games (.732). In just under 10 seasons of existence, the Roadrunners have averaged more than 20 wins per year.

Waiting for History

After becoming the only school in NCAA history to make the NCAA tournament every year of its existence while competing in Division II, the 'Runners will have to wait two more seasons before they can hope to build upon that distinction as a Division I school. CSUB will be NCAA Tournament eligible for the 2010–11 season.

Up Next

CSUB will take its longest break of the season, 11 days, before taking on Cal State Fullerton at the Icardo Center on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. The 'Runners will be wearing special pink jerseys for the WBCA's Pink Zone promotion in support of breast cancer awareness.
