`Runners Continue Improving Despite Losing to UCSB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball finished the series against UC Santa Barbara with two offensively productive and close losses in which the Roadrunners had every possibility of coming away with wins. UC Santa Barbara, a program that consistently ranks among the top in the Big West, was pushed to the brink, even relinquishing leads to CSUB at times. The first contest of the doubleheader ended with a 7-6 UCSB nail-biting win that saw the 'Runners nearly make a comeback. The second game was taken by UCSB 10-6 in a battle that had the Gauchos defending the lead after a 7-run fifth inning to hold the hosts off.

Notables
  • Karissa Munsey had a big day, extending her hitting streak to three straight games, along with two homers in series. That included Munsey's picture-perfect 3-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 HR game. She moved to become CSUB's home run leader on the season.
  • The `Runners went toe-to-toe with one of conference's best teams, looking better that their opponents for most of the doubleheader. Jordan Head also had an impressive game during the second contest of the doubleheader. She recorded 4 RBI and was the primary offensive reason why CSUB was able to stay in the game.
  • Samantha Martinez's defensive performances at second base kept CSUB competitive the entire series, and even more in the doubleheader. She made a number of highlight-worthy plays including one game that had her catching two separate line drives that led to turning quick double plays.
Quotes
  • "It's a hard series to evaluate because I thought there were so many phases in which we played well. Honestly, we were a couple plays here-and-there from winning all three games, and we probably deserved to win the series. But we made some mistakes and didn't throw enough strikes, and that costs us a little in each game and a lot in the series."
  • "Last weekend after the UC Davis series, we challenged the kids and said that when they showed up this week, we would task them to work extremely hard, compete, commit, and play together. They showed up as a team and battled all weekend. I couldn't be prouder at how the vast majority of our roster responded and performed as well as they did.
CSUB 6, UC Santa Barbara 7
  • UC Santa Barbara drew first blood of the day with a two-run first inning, before extending the lead to 3-0 in the third.
  • CSUB responded handedly with a hot bottom of the third. Maya Williams started the scoring stretch with a hard hit left field liner before Lauren Randle scored her later in the inning.
  • The Gaucho pitchers began to lose control, as the starter walked a run in before the reliever after her did the same thing. After three innings, CSUB and UCSB were knotted up at three-all.
  • Kirsten Martinez gave a valiant effort, but the `Runners turned to their bullpen with Kaycie Kennedy. UCSB hit one that hopped off the second base bag to move past the center fielder and score a runner. UCSB's Ashley Donaldson cleared the bases on a sac fly to go up 5-3.
  • Karissa Munsey crushed her team-leading fourth home run of the year to tie up the game at 5-5, forcing the Gauchos to bring out their second reliever of the day.
  • UCSB pulled ahead 7-5 in the fifth. Despite having baserunners in both of their final offensive innings, the `Runners were unable to bridge the gap, dropping the game to UCSB 7-6.
CSUB 6, UC Santa Barbara 10
  • CSUB opened the game with an offensive surge. Samantha Martinez crossed the plate courtesy of a Maya Molina-Villareal RBI, and Jordan Head knocked in another two runs in before the Gauchos finally stopped the bleeding.
  • CSUB took the 3-0 lead after the first inning and held for a bit before the Gauchos finally responded in the top of the third with a string of hits for three runs.
  • The Gauchos got their bats working again in the fifth inning with a small surge on Brianna Sanchez before Reina Castillo relieved her. UCSB was able to keep piling on to make it a 7-run inning, taking the 10-3 lead.
  • Maya Williams drilled into one for an RBI. That kept the bases loaded with a new UCSB reliever forced to take the circle. The `Runners inched closer, but the Gauchos still led 10-4.
  • In the end, UCSB's work in the fifth inning proved to be insurmountable despite the `Runners giving it everything they had in the final few innings. The Gauchos completed their sweep with the 10-6 victory.
