Bakersfield Back in the Win Column vs Broncos

Santa Clara, CA – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team traveled back to California for their last road trip before their first homestand of the season. The first series of this road trip came against the Santa Clara Broncos where the `Runners split the two-game series. They will continue their road trip in Fresno for the Bulldog Classic.

CSUB 0, Santa Clara 9
  • The Broncos jumped out to an early 4 – 0 lead.
  • Maya Williams led off the game for the Roadrunners with a single to center field.
  • Santa Clara would plate three more in the third, thanks to a three-run shot to right field.
  • Bakersfield would not generate much offense in this one, in the fifth inning Kaia Johnson and Jocelynn Molina both singled up the middle but nothing came of it.
CSUB 4, Santa Clara 2
  • Bakersfield struck first in Game 2 after a pair of walks and timely hitting. Johnson singled through the left side bringing in Samantha Martinez to put the `Runners up 1 – 0.
  • The Roadrunners filled the bases later in the top of the second, Williams worked a walk scoring in Lauren Randle, extending the lead 2 – 0.
  • Reina Castillo held Santa Clara scoreless through four.
  • Samantha Martinez doubled into the left field gap plating Shaylene Fuimaono. Bakersfield would later go ahead 4 – 0.
  • The Broncos would cut into the Roadrunner lead down in the bottom of the seventh, but Bakersfield would hold on and win it 4 – 2.
Quotes from Dan Sperl
  • "The first game was not our best, but we responded very well in game two and earned a split against a Santa Clara team that is playing well. I'm proud of how we responded today.Reina Castillo held Santa Clara scoreless through four."
  • "We had good at bats at the plate all day and we finally got some breaks and balls to fall in the nightcap. Sam's double to score Shay was a culmination of doing several things right on that side of the ball. The Broncos would cut into the Roadrunner lead down in the bottom of the seventh, but Bakersfield would hold on and win it 4 – 2."
  • "Reina was excellent in game two and hopefully that's a turning point for her this season. She can be a leader in that role for us."
  • "It was great to have Jordan back and she made an immediate impact defensively at the SS position."
