Game Recap: Softball |

CSUB's Hot Start in Game 2 is not Enough to Hold Off New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team started its long road trip today with a doubleheader against New Mexico. CSUB dropped Game 1 after falling behind early as the Lobos took advantage of wild pitches and fielding errors. In Game 2, the Roadrunners jumped out in front early but were unable to keep it going throughout the entirety of the game.

CSUB 2, New Mexico 8
  • The Lobos knocked Brianna Sanchez out of the game early, scoring four runs in the second inning.
  • Kirsten Martinez relieved Sanchez in the third, but New Mexico would then add two more to their lead via a homerun and RBI single.
  • Bakersfield settled in and adjusted at the top of the fourth, working the count and forcing longer at-bats. Shaylene Fuimaono drove in two runs on a single into center field, narrowing the lead to 6-2.
  • New Mexico added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, going up 8-2.

CSUB 3, New Mexico 10
  • Bakersfield started Game 2 off hot with three runs in the first inning. Savanna Montoya led the game off with a double, then Samantha Martinez and Reina Castillo drew a pair of walks. A Fuimaono single drove in Montoya, bringing up Senior Maya Williams with the bases loaded again. Williams was hit by a pitch bringing in Martinez.
  • Still in the first inning with one out, Lauren Randle reaches on a fielder's choice plating Castillo and giving the `Runners a three-run lead.
  • New Mexico would immediately answer back in the bottom half on the first, scoring on a throwing error and a two-run home run while evening the game at three runs apiece.
  • CSUB's Castillo would get out of a jam in the second inning allowing only one run due to a bases-loaded walk.
  • In the bottom of the third, UNM scored three runs on three hits and one error, widening the gap 7-3.
  • The `Runners threatened often throughout the game with runners on, but they were unable to come away with any runs after the first inning.
  • Fuimaono tallied two hits and one RBI in the loss.

Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "Today was a hard lesson because we were not consistent with our focus or competitiveness and that cost us both ends of the doubleheader."
  • "We need to play with more confidence and belief, and we are entirely capable of doing so, we showed some flashes of what we can be at the plate and in the circle, but just weren't consistent enough today."
