BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team defeated Bakersfield College 4-1 in the home opener for the Roadrunners Friday night.

The first flight saw the ‘Runners No. 2 duo of Jocelyn Rodriguez and Mattison DeGarmo win in straight sets, as did the No. 4 pair of Hannah Manzanares and Madi Busler. The CSUB no. 1 team of Carol Grasso and Sara Little clinched the dual with a straights victory. Ashley Pratter and Sarah Garrow put the ‘Runners up 4-0 by winning 2-0. BC earned their lone victory at number five.

“We executed most of the things that we practiced during the week including the new strategies that have implemented during the week of practice,” said CSUB head coach Cesar Benatti. “Bakersfield College has a good team and made us compete at our best. It was a great local challenge to start our home matches.”

The Roadrunners host a tri-dual Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. against Mira Costa College. The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of Roadrunner Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
