SARATOGA, Calif.—McKenna Yates scored with 56 seconds remaining to give No. 16 San José State an 8-7 victory over No. 22 CSU Bakersfield in the regular season finale for the Roadrunners Friday afternoon at West Valley College.
Donia Momen scored a pair of goals as the Spartans (10-16, 1-5 MPSF) took a 4-2 first quarter lead. Kristen Jensen, Nicola Barrett, Tancy Aldridge scored in the second to send the ‘Runners into a 5-4 advantage. Carla Toha Vilanova tied the match with 1:53 to play in the first half before Ashley Paz completed a hat trick to provide the Roadrunners with a 6-5 halftime lead.
Carla Toha tied the match at the 2:26 mark of the third quarter for the only score of the eight-minute frame. Sierra Painter returned the lead to the Spartans with a goal 1:26 into the fourth. Jensen tied the match a little under two minutes later. This set the stage for the Yates gamewinner.
“For most of the game, we were disciplined and in control,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “There were just a couple of moments in the game where we made mistakes and San Jose was able to capitalize on that.”
The Roadrunners (12-15, 0-6 MPSF) will be the No. 7 seed at next week’s MPSF Tournament. CSUB will play either Stanford or USC in the 2-7 match at UCLA next Friday at 11 a.m.
