LOS ANGELES—No. 3 UCLA defeated No. 23 CSU Bakersfield 17-5 in MPSF water polo action Saturday afternoon.
Maddie Musselman scored four goals to lead the Bruins. Rachel Fattal charted a hat trick for UCLA, becoming the fourth Bruin to score at least 200 goals in a career. The Bruins led 5-1 after one before UCLA outscored the Roadrunners 7-0 in the second. CSUB outscored the Bruins 3-1 in the final period.
Ashley Paz tallied two CSUB goals. Kristen Jensen, Jada Helberg, and Cassandra Ream rounded out the Roadrunner scoring. Ream drew four exclusions, which helped lead to four CSUB power play goals. Courtney Wahlstrom made 13 saves.
“We did not have a good first half,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “I think we really gained some confidence in the second half. We went 4-for-5 on our power play, which is an accomplishment against team like UCLA.”
The Roadrunners travel to the San Diego State Aztec Invitational Sunday. CSUB plays Chapman at 10:30 a.m. and No. 21 Wagner at 3:30 p.m.
