ST. LOUIS—The two remaining CSU Bakersfield wrestlers entered in the 2017 NCAA Tournament were eliminated on Friday at the Scottrade Center.
Matt Williams and No. 14 Corey Griego wrestled to a scoreless first period in their 197-pound consolation bout. Griego took the bottom to get the second underway and scored with a two-point reversal. Williams escaped and earned an escape shortly before the second ended. Williams took the bottom to begin the third and escaped right away for a two-point advantage. Both wrestlers would be in the neutral position for the remainder of the final 1:30 as Williams avenged a pair of earlier season losses to Griego 4-2.
Williams faced No. 11 Shawn Scott of Northern Illinois in his third consolation bout of the tournament. Neither wrestler scored in the first period. Scott was in the down position to begin the second and earned an escape 45 seconds into the period for the only score of the second. Williams took the down position to begin the third. Williams finally escaped with 30 seconds to go in the third to tie the score. 13 seconds later, Scott completed a shot in and pinned Williams at the 6:43 mark.
Coleman Hammond took on Wisconsin’s Andrew Crone in the second consolation match at 149 pounds. Hammond took Crone down in the first period and built a 2+ minute riding time advantage. Crowe was in the top position to start the second and rode Hammond until he recorded a four-point near fall to end the second. Crone recorded a two-point reversal to start the third. Hammond would record a late escape to make it the final 6-3 in favor of Crone.
"It was another tough day," said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera. "Matt and Coleman lost close matches. This was a great learning experience for our guys. They need to use the losses as motivation going forward."
Penn State (74) leads the team race after three sessions. With 2.5 points, CSUB stands in a tie for 50th place with Purdue. Television coverage for the remainder of the tournament (as all five Roadrunners are eliminated) can be found on ESPN, ESPN U, ESPN3.com or the Watch ESPN App.
