BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The apex of the season has arrived for CSU Bakersfield's men's golf team as the Roadrunners will travel to Mesa, Ariz., Apr. 28-30, for the Western Athletic Conference Championship. CSUB and the rest of the WAC will compete in the three-round tournament at Longbow Golf Club with the conference title on the line.
“The guys are very pumped to head to Conference this week,” said Meggan Bunker, Head Coach of the men's team. “We have been waiting for this tournament all year and the anticipation is building up. We are ready to grind all week and play as hard as we can to finish off this season with a bang. The team is in good spirits and the guys are ready to achieve their personal and team goals. We are ready to go.”
Bunker will send senior Izzad Ibrahim, juniors Nathan Green and Garry Cai, and freshmen Warren Miller and Dominick Hoover to Mesa for the 2017 WAC Championship. Green has led the 'Runners all season with a 75.40 scoring average and is coming off of an outstanding performance at the Cal Poly Shootout. The native of Green River, Wyo. shot a collegiate-best round of three-under-par to open the tournament.
The ‘Runners have finished fifth of seven teams at each of the last two WAC Championships. In 2016, Ibrahim tied for 18th overall, the best placing for any ‘Runner at a WAC Championship. CSUB has posted scores in the +40s relative to par each of the last two seasons and will look to lower that total this time around.
The 2017 WAC Championship will kick off Friday, Apr. 28, and will feature one round of golf per day over the course of three days. The men will play in twosomes and CSUB will kick off Day 1 with UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday. Tee times for the ‘Runners will begin at 9:20 a.m. (PT) and will be staggered every eight minutes.
