MESA, Ariz. – The Roadrunner men's golf team opened the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Championship with a slow start in high winds at the Longbow Golf Club. Junior Nathan Green paced CSU Bakersfield as the 'Runners finished the first of three days in sixth place.

“We struggled as a team today,” said Meggan Bunker, Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “There were a lot of missed shots and missed opportunities. We did not handle the strong winds as well as other teams did, leaving a lot of holes grinding for par or more. We need to come out tomorrow with a new game plan, stronger mental games, and play in our zone. I believe a lot of high expectations were built up within each of the men for this tournament. We need to settle down the next two rounds, play without tension, and feel free to execute the next couple of days.”

Through the first nine holes of the first round, Green led the ‘Runners at two-over-par. The junior birdied his first hole of the round and held on to pace CSUB with freshman Dominick Hoover close behind. Hoover bogeyed three holes on the front nine to make the turn at three-over while the ‘Runners sat at the back of the pack.

On the back nine, Green posted four bogeys to shoot CSUB's lowest score of the round, a six-over 77. Hoover carded two birdies on the back, but finished three strokes behind Green with a score of 80. Fellow freshman Warren Miller posted an 81 in Round 1 while senior Izzad Ibrahim rounded out the ‘Runner scoring four at 84. Garry Cai's round of 86 was dropped.

CSUB finished the round in sixth place of seven teams with a four-man score of 322 (+38). The ‘Runners sit 10 strokes ahead of Chicago State and 20 back of fifth-place UTRGV. Green's 77 was good enough to tie for 23rd overall among 40 student-athletes. Seattle U leads the team scores (290), but multiple teams are close behind. The Redhawks' Kyle Cornett leads the individual leaderboard at 68 (-3).

The Roadrunners and the rest of the conference will return to Longbow Golf Club on Saturday, Apr. 29, for the second round of the WAC Championship. CSUB will begin teeing off at 8:40 a.m. with staggered starts every eight minutes.
