SAN ANTONIO, Texas– Junior pitcher Katie Chavez scattered five hits and freshman shortstop Sammy Rodriguez came up with a clutch RBI single in the sixth inning to propel the CSUB Roadrunners to a 2-0 victory over the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners Sunday afternoon in Texas.

Behind Chavez’s third shutout of the season, CSUB took the three-game series from UTSA after Saturday’s doubleheader split.

Rodriguez struck the big blow in the sixth inning, singling to center to drive home pinch runner Chelsey Bell with what proved to be the game winner. Jill McClelland added a superfluous sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between Chavez and UTSA starter Morgan Luksa. Both teams saw golden chances to score early. UTSA loaded the bases with one out in second before Chavez fanned Cassie Miller and coaxed Chelsey Chapman to pop out to end the threat. CSUB put runners on first and second with one out in the third, but couldn’t score either.

CSUB finally broke through in the sixth when Justeen Maeva led off with a single before giving way to Bell. Bell moved to second on Jaimey Kleinsmith’s sacrifice and to third on a passed ball. Rodriguez then made Chavez a winner.

With Sunday’s win, CSUB (26-21 overall) is guaranteed at least a .500 record in just its second full season of NCAA Division I play. The ’Runners will close the 2009 campaign at the NCAA Division I Independent Championships next weekend in Greeley, Colo. They will play a maximum of five games at the tournament.
