BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s outdoor track and field teams are beginning the second month of the 2017 season with a trip to the Distance Carnival in San Francisco, Calif. The Roadrunners will send a select group of student-athletes to compete at the meet hosted by San Francisco State, Mar. 31 - Apr. 1.

“While this meet offers a full complement of events, the main focus is on the 800-meter and up,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field at CSUB. “It has a good history of producing good times and we wanted to give some of our student-athletes an opportunity. For the rest of the team, this will serve as a hard training week.”

Mansur-Wentworth will send three of CSUB’s top performers to the Distance Carnival this weekend. For the ‘Runner men, freshman Curt Threlkeld will run the 800-meter and redshirt sophomore Gabe Geta will tackle the 400-meter hurdles.

“We want to give Curtis the opportunity to be in a competitive race with guys who can challenge him the entire way,” Mansur-Wentworth said of the freshman from Bakersfield, who has won the 800 at each of the last two meets. “Curtis has put in very solid workouts and is prepared to race well.”

CSUB’s coach expects Gaeta to continue to represent the ‘Runners well this weekend: “Since Gabe is coming off a personal best from CSUN, we wanted to give him an opportunity to compete this weekend.”

On the women’s side, junior Angel Valdez will be the lone ‘Runner representative, tackling the 10,000m race. “There are so few opportunities to race that distance in California that are not restricted to just the very elite,” stated Mansur-Wentworth. “We want to give Angel the opportunity to race the challenging distance prior to the WAC Championships so she goes in more prepared this year.”

Valdez will open the meet with the other ladies in the 10,000m race on Friday morning. Gaeta and Threlkeld will wrap up the meet Saturday afternoon with their races. For a full schedule events as well as live stats for the meet, click on the following link.
