BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2017 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships is set to get going this week and CSU Bakersfield’s women’s squad is prepared to vie for All-Conference honors up and down its lineup.

“Since making the move to NCAA Division I, the women’s team has not been able to put more than one woman on the podium in an indoor championship,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field at CSUB. “Our goal is to improve upon that with our veterans and our newcomers.”

Leading the way for the ‘Runners will be redshirt senior Tricia Cervantes, who will compete in her final meet in a Roadrunner uniform this week. After transferring from junior college, Cervantes collected four All-WAC honors in the multi events. The native of Beaumont, Calif. earned bronze in the pentathlon at the 2016 WAC Indoor Championships and will look to get back on the podium in that event as well as the 60m hurdles. Cervantes will also lead the ‘Runners in the 4x400m relay.

Fellow redshirt senior Marina Emhoff will also compete in her final WAC Indoor Championships and hopes to add indoor All-WAC honors to her pair of outdoor honors in the 400m. After a record-setting cross country season, junior Angel Valdez will look to podium in the 5000m and 3000m races.

“We have a few of freshmen competing in their first WAC Championships,” Mansur-Wentworth said. “I expect them to make big impacts.” Bakersfield natives Falon Wilson, Mariah LeSure, and Julianne Finch will compete for the ‘Runners this week. Wilson is ranked eighth in the WAC in the 60m hurdles this year and will also take on the 60m dash while LeSure will tackle the 60m and 200m dashes. Finch is CSUB’s indoor record holder in the pole vault and is third in the WAC so far this season.

Mansur-Wentworth will also send junior Susannah Vera to the WAC Indoor meet for the third time in her career. At last year’s Outdoor Championships, Vera placed seventh in the high jump and is currently 13th in the WAC in the event.

Missing from the lineup this week will be freshman standout Jazmine Ramey, who is recovering from a virus and will miss her first chance at the WAC Indoor meet. Another big blow came in the loss of redshirt junior Ariana Mariscal, who is a four-time All-Conference performer, but re-injured her foot earlier this season.

The Roadrunners and the rest of the WAC will head to Nampa, Idaho for the 2017 Indoor Championships. The meet will span Feb. 23-25 with the multi events kicking the competition off on Thursday. Friday will feature the start of the field event finals and the running event preliminary heats. Saturday’s competition will finish off the field events and see the finals of the running events.

A full schedule of events as well as a link to live stats for the meet can be found at the WAC’s Championship Central page.
