BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women’s indoor track and field team is ready to get its season to a start and the Roadrunners are preparing for the first of two trips to Arizona this season. CSUB is set to open its season Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Lumberjack Team Challenge hosted by NAU.
“I am excited about the veterans and the freshmen we have this year,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, CSUB’s Director of Track and Field. “I expect a very successful year and can't wait to see what they can accomplish this season.”
Mansur-Wentworth went on to highlight her student-athletes who will competing in Flagstaff, Ariz. this weekend: “We will be led by Tricia Cervantes in her final season. The senior Team Captain has only indoor eligibility remaining and has a total of four All-WAC honors in the multi events so far.” Cervantes will compete in the 60m hurdles, long jump, and high jump in preparation for her final WAC Championships next month.
“We’re looking for Angel Valdez to convert her cross country strength to the track this Saturday,” said Mansur-Wentworth. Valdez, a junior from Bakersfield, broke CSUB’s cross country 6k record this year and earned All-WAC in the sport. She will tackle the 3000m in Arizona this weekend.
“The veterans will be joined by our strongest freshman class in many years,” Mansur-Wentworth commented. Julianne Finch, a Bakersfield native and Garces High School graduate, will compete in the pole vault after being a State finalist in the event as a senior.
Falon Wilson, another Bakersfield native who was also a State qualifier in the 100m hurdles, will get her first chance to prove herself at the collegiate level. The freshman will make her debut in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash this weekend. A pair of freshmen will take on the 60m and 200m double: Mariah LeSure, a graduate of Bakersfield High School and Jazmine Ramey, a Centennial High School alumna.
Rounding out the ‘Runner squad this weekend is freshman Paradise Pelzer. The former North High Blade is coming off a strong cross country season and will attempt her first 3000m indoor race.
Saturday’s meet is set to begin at 8 a.m. (MST) with the field events while the track events will kick off at 10:30 a.m. A link to live stats is expected to be made available before the meet and can be found at CSUB’s track and field schedule page.
