BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s women’s soccer team earned the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and the Roadrunners are chomping at the bit to get going in Kansas City, Mo. After sitting out Thursday night’s first-round matches with a bye, Bakersfield will kick off the WAC Tournament in a semifinal clash with the winner of the No. 3/6 matchup between UMKC and UT Rio Grande Valley Friday evening.
“This weekend is a culmination of everything we have worked on over the past 12 months,” said Gary Curneen, head coach of the ‘Runners. “All the spring and summer training programs were planned with this WAC tournament in mind and the players have thrown every ounce of energy, both on and off the field, to earn the right to enter it in a unique position. We are all excited and confident as we travel to Kansas City and I am certain that this team will give everything they have to make history and bring a trophy back to Bakersfield on Sunday night.”
CSUB is riding momentum into the WAC Tournament after finishing WAC play 4-2-1. The ‘Runners also got a boost of energy Wednesday night when the Conference announced its major award winners. Sophie Freeman took home WAC Freshman of the Year honors while Curneen was named WAC Coach of the Year. CSUB also posted personal best totals with four first team honorees and five student-athletes named All-Conference between the two teams.
The ’Runners are now 0-5-0 all-time against UMKC after a tough loss on the road earlier this season. CSUB fell to the Kangaroos 3-0 in Kansas City in what Curneen described as a lack of aggression from his squad. The ‘Runners will attempt to earn their first-ever win against the Kangaroos if UMKC advances to the semifinals.
After defeating UTRGV at home in October, CSUB is now 3-0-0 all-time against the Vaqueros. The ‘Runners fell to CSUB 1-0 in Bakersfield this season behind Freeman’s heroic, 90th-minute goal on her own birthday. Should UTRGV advance to the next round, the Vaqueros will be looking for revenge and the ‘Runners may need another dose of magic to earn a victory.
CSUB’s semifinal match will be played Friday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. (PT). The match will be live streamed via the WAC Digital Network. For links to the live stream and live stats as well as more information on the WAC Women’s Soccer Tournament, visit the Tournament Central page at WACSports.com.
