BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2016 CSU Bakersfield women’s soccer regular season will wrap up with one final match this weekend. With places in the Western Athletic Conference standings still very much up in the air, the Roadrunners will face off against Grand Canyon in what may prove to be a dramatic season finale on Saturday night.

With only one match remaining in WAC play, the ‘Runners currently sit in second place in the conference. CSUB has finished sixth in each of its first three seasons since joining the league and will certainly improve upon that result in 2016. The ‘Runners can clinch second place with either a win or tie against GCU Saturday night or if Utah Valley ties or loses against Seattle U Friday night.

“Obviously this weekend is huge for our program,” said Gary Curneen, who is in his third season as Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “It's a great opportunity for us to make history and take the program to another level of success. I am so proud of the team for earning the right to be in this position, but this is not a time to reflect on what we have done. We are going to fight for both the second seed in this league and the right to head into the WAC Tournament with confidence and momentum.”

Curneen went on to discuss his squad’s concentration heading into this weekend’s matchup with the Lopes: “One of the foundations of our program is to focus only on what we can control, so, we will take that mindset into Saturday night and approach the game with Grand Canyon as a game that we need to win. If we are aggressive in our mindset and our play, we will have a much better chance of producing a great performance and making it a special night for CSU Bakersfield women's soccer.”

CSUB hold an 11-6-3 all-time series lead over Grand Canyon, but the ‘Runners have not beaten the Lopes since joining the WAC in 2013 (0-3-3). In 2015, CSUB and GCU drew in both of their regular season matches. Earlier this year, in a non-conference meeting, GCU outlasted CSUB for a 2-1 victory in Phoenix. The Lopes’ McKenzie Cook put GCU ahead 1-0 in the 55th minute, but Sabrina Delgado tied the match in the 72nd minute. Cook netted the game-winner for the Lopes with seven minutes remaining.

Saturday’s match at the Main Soccer Field is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets are available ahead of time at or at the gate. Fans who cannot make it to the match can watch live via the WAC Digital Network while live stats will also be available. Links to the live stats and the video stream can be found here.
