BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner women’s soccer team returns to Bakersfield to finish out the 2016 regular season with a three-match home stand. CSU Bakersfield will host UT Rio Grande Valley Oct. 21 and New Mexico State Oct. 23 in a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches at the Main Soccer Field this weekend. The ‘Runners will then round out the season Oct. 29 with a home match against Grand Canyon.
“We are excited about hosting the final games of the WAC season and we are desperate to finish the season strong in front of our home fans,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “Our opposition will pose different tests in terms of their playing styles, but both teams will be very tough to beat and we will have to be at our best to win the points.”
Curneen went on to discuss what his team needed to bring to these final matches in order to be successful: “Our focus will be on our aggression, intensity levels, and our execution in both penalty boxes. As usual, I am excited to see how we do and look forward to seeing another positive response to a big challenge.”
Sitting at 6-9-1 (2-2-0 WAC) on the year, the ‘Runners are looking for their seventh victory of the season. One more win would reset CSUB's Division I single-season record as the ‘Runners continue to build their program under Curneen’s plan.
The ‘Runners bested UTRGV in each of the first two meetings in the programs’ histories. CSUB defeated the Vaqueros at home in 2014 by a score of 4-2. Last year, the ‘Runners travelled to Edinburg, Texas and shut out the Vaqueros 3-0. In that match, CSUB had three unique goal scorers in Aminah Settles, Alexa Orrante (PK), and Madi Giammona.
NMSU and CSUB will meet for the eighth time in the all-time series while the ‘Runners hold a slim, 4-3 series lead. Since joining the WAC in 2014, CSUB has gone 3-1 against the Aggies including a pair of 2-1 victories in 2015. The ‘Runners beat the Aggies in Las Cruces, N.M. in October before knocking NMSU out of the WAC Tournament in November.
Friday’s match is a doubleheader for the Roadrunner men and women with the ladies set to kick off against UTRGV at 5 p.m. The men are scheduled to play UTRGV at 7:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s team’s game, whichever comes later.
Sunday’s match against NMSU will begin at 1 p.m. at the Main Soccer Field and tickets for all of these matches can be purchased ahead of time at GoRunners.com/tix or at the gate. Fans who are unable to join us can watch the women’s game on Friday via ‘Runner Sports Network and Sunday’s match on the WAC Digital Network.
