BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Another home and away weekend is on the horizon for CSU Bakersfield’s women’s soccer team as the Roadrunners prepare for another busy week of action. CSUB hosts Eastern Washington on Friday, Sept. 9, before traveling to face Cal Poly on Sunday, Sept. 11.
“This weekend is another opportunity for us to grow and test ourselves against top opposition,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the ‘Runners. “Last season's game against Eastern Washington was definitely an exciting one and I would expect the same again this year. We are desperate to continue our home form and want to make sure we can turn the Main Soccer Field into a tough place for WAC teams to travel to this year. Progress is the name of the game at this stage of the season, so, we will look to build upon the strong performances so far and we are confident that if we can get that right, the results will not be far away.”
The all-time series between CSUB and Eastern Washington is deadlocked at 2-2-2. The Eagles won the first-ever meeting back in 2007 before the ‘Runners claimed the next two contests. After a tie in 2010, the two teams did not meet until the 2014 season when the Eagles took a 3-0 victory in Bakersfield. Last year, the ‘Runners evened the series with a 1-1 draw on the road.
The ‘Runners have faced off eight times against Cal Poly over the years with the Mustangs dominating the all-time series, 7-1-0. Cal Poly has won the last three meetings, including a 2-1, double-overtime victory in Bakersfield in 2011. The two programs last met in 2012, two seasons before Curneen took over the helm at CSUB.
CSUB will take on EWU Friday at 7 p.m. Come out to the Main Soccer Field for Free Food Friday, where CSUB students get free food (while supplies last). The Eastern Washington match will also feature the 'Runners wearing Gold Laces to show their support for the Go4theGoal Foundation’s Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative.
