BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2016 women’s soccer season is one day away from officially starting for CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners are set to hit the road and square off against Sacramento State for the season opener on Friday before returning to Bakersfield on Sunday to face the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the ‘Runners, is optimistic about the season thanks to his team’s preparation: “It’s obviously an exciting time opening the season against quality opposition. You can never predict if everything will click right away, but I am confident of one thing: our players’ commitment to intense preparation and moving this program forward has been nothing short of outstanding.”

Curneen went on to describe his squad’s preseason work: “It’s been hard, challenging, and has asked questions of everyone, both mentally and physically. I am proud to go into this season with a group of players and staff who want to be successful and aren’t afraid to work for it. We hope to do the school proud and take this program to the next level, starting this weekend.”

The ‘Runners will be led into action by a pair of returning student-athletes: redshirt sophomore Aminah Settles and junior Maja Green. Settles, a forward from Tucson, Ariz., paced CSUB in goals and points a year ago and looks to be a big threat for opposing defenses in 2016. Green, a native of Sweden, anchored the ‘Runner back line that held opponents to just 1.81 goals per game, the school’s best defensive effort since 2012.

CSUB and Sacramento State will face each other for the seventh time in the two programs’ histories. The Hornets boast a 5-1 record all-time against the ‘Runners and have won a match against CSUB in each of the last three seasons. One year ago, Sac State put away three goals in the first half and held off the ‘Runners for a 3-2 victory in Bakersfield.

Fresno State has also been a thorn in the side of the ‘Runners in years past, earning a 6-1-2 record all-time against CSUB. The Bulldogs have not lost to the ‘Runners since 2008, but the two teams have not met since a 2012 trip to Fresno that resulted in a 3-0 victory for the home squad.

Friday’s match in Sacramento is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff. Live stats during the game can be viewed at this link.
