SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The CSUB Roadrunners return to action on the road Tuesday evening as they take on UC Santa Barbara for the second time this season as the ‘Runners look for the season sweep over the Gauchos (1-9).
Bakersfield defeated UC Santa Barbara 77-70 on November 19 at the Icardo Center in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Redshirt sophomore Damiyne Durham led CSUB with a career-high 30 points on 11-27 shooting and 8-19 from three-point range. Durham and the Roadrunners set several schools records in that contest as Durham set the CSUB Division I record for field goal attempts in a game, three-point attempts in a game, and three-pointers made. CSUB also tied a Division I school record with 32 three-point attempts in the win.
Tuesday’s meeting will be the first of two final non-conference games for the Roadrunners who will head out next week to Hanover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth before opening Western Athletic Conference play on Jan. 7 at home vs. Seattle. The Roadrunners have won three of their last four games with a three-game winning streak being snapped last Thursday night 81-71 at BYU. The ‘Runners fell behind by 20 after a slow first-half start but rallied twice in the second half to pull within nine. CSUB was led by 22 points from Durham and 13 from Jaylin Airington.
Durham and Airington lead CSUB with 18 points and 16 points per game respectively. Durham continues to be one of the best three-point shooters in the nation; he is ranked third with 53 three-pointers made this season while he ranks second in the country with 4.08 three-pointers-made per game. CSUB is ranked 34th in the NCAA in scoring defense allowing just 63.4 points per game, the ‘Runners also rank 8th in the nation forcing 18 turnovers per contest.
UC Santa Barbara enters Tuesday’s game 1-9 and in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Their lone win came over Division II Sonoma State. They recently lost a pair of games at the South Point Classic in Las Vegas, 73-57 to Iona and 67-66 to Nevada. They are led by Gabe Vincent’s 23 ppg, he scored 13 vs. CSUB in November. The Gauchos are shooting just 38% from the field and 27% from three-point range, they are allowing their opponents 46% from the field this season.
