Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s men’s basketball team is preparing for another game away from home, this time, against Grand Canyon. The Roadrunners are 5-1 in Western Athletic Conference play this year, their best start since joining the conference, and will head to Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 4 to face the ‘Lopes.

“We had a lot of progress by some guys who hadn’t been playing as well, but they stepped up and helped us when we were on the road this last weekend,” stated Jeff Conarroe, CSUB’s assistant coach. “Grand Canyon is really good offensively. Hopefully the rest we got this week with only one game will put us in a position where we are ready to go. They are a challenge and a good team and we’re going to expect their best shot, because that’s what everybody has been giving us.”

The ‘Runners are coming back from Kansas City, Mo. after a win against UMKC on Saturday, Jan 28. The ‘Roos made it a close fight throughout the game, but the Runners’ led UMKC the entire game en route to a victory by a score of 74-63.

Grand Canyon will welcome CSUB to Arizona with a 15-8 overall record and a 4-2 record in WAC play. GCU went 1-1 last week with an 85-77 victory over Chicago State and an 83-77 loss against UMKC. The ‘Lopes have had a long, busy stretch as their game against Chicago State went to double overtime and GCU won a non-conference matchup against Bethesda on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The ‘Lopes are led by DeWayne Russell with an average of 23.1 points a game this season. Joshua Braun has contributed nearly 20 points per game in WAC games and is GCU’s other primary offensive weapon.

The Runners’ enter the game with a 21-15 lead over Grand Canyon in the all-time series. CSUB is preparing for the strong offense from GCU and will counteract it with its defense, which ranks among the NCAA Division I’s Top 50 in several statistical categories. CSUB’s Jaylin Airington leads the Runners’ with a 15-point scoring average. While Matt Smith has been added 15 a game in WAC play this season.

Saturday’s game is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip off in Phoenix, Ariz. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 3 and radio will be available through Newstalk 1180 AM/96.1 FM KERN. Links to both broadcast as well as live stats can be found on the CSUB men’s basketball schedule page.
