BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men’s basketball team hits the road this week for its first Western Athletic Conference road trip of the season. The Roadrunners will travel to Edinburg, Texas to face UT Rio Grande Valley, Jan. 12, before wrapping up the weekend at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., Jan. 14.
CSUB opened conference play last week with a 78-71 victory over Seattle U in the Icardo Center. The win was the tenth of the season for the ‘Runners, who improved to 10-6 (1-0 WAC) on the year. Senior Dedrick Basile led all scorers in that game with 21 points while redshirt junior Brent Wrapp recorded his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a CSUB Division I recording-tying 11 assists.
The ‘Runners will head to Texas to tackle the Vaqueros, who are coming off of an 83-64 road win over Chicago State and an 83-79 loss at UMKC last week. Nick Dixon averaged 20.5 points per game last week and his season average of 17.3 points per game is a close second to teammate Antonio Green (17.5 pgg). The Vaqueros are 9-10 (1-1 WAC) this season but excel at home in the UTRGV Fieldhouse with an impressive 6-1 record.
The ‘Runners are ranked 26th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 63.6 ppg. They are forcing an average of 17 turnovers a game, 14th-most in the nation. Bakersfield’s pressure-defense has created 136 steals in 16 games, 29th-most in the NCAA. The ‘Runners are averaging 73 ppg and are led by Damiyne Durham’s 16.3 ppg. Durham is one of the top three-point shooters in the country with 58 three’s made this season, 8th-most in the NCAA.
A year ago, CSUB defeated UTRGV 77-58 in the Icardo Center, Jan. 21, while Basile scored 16 points. In February, the 'Runners earned a 70-57 win on the road with Jaylin Airington and Durham scoring 12 points apiece.
