This is the first NIT appearance for the Roadrunners who earned the automatic bid as regular-season champions of the Western Athletic Conference. It is their third postseason appearance in the last six seasons following an NCAA Tournament first-round appearance in 2016 when the 15th-seeded Roadrunners faced eventual Final Four participant Oklahoma in the first round in Oklahoma City. Despite an 82-68 loss, the Roadrunners led for parts of the game and were within five points with just over four minutes remaining. It was the closest game for Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament prior to their loss to eventual National Champion Villanova in the Final Four.
The victory over Cal in the first round was the first victory at the Division I level for the Roadrunners in an NCAA postseason tournament. They are now 2-2 in Division I postseason games after their second-round win over Colorado State.
The 'Runners also earned a 2012 CIT berth during the first season for head coach Rod Barnes. CSUB has now qualified for three postseason tournaments in just their 7th season of NCAA Division I full-membership.
In their Division II history, CSUB was one of the most decorated programs at that level winning three national championships including a 33-0 season during the 1992-93 season. CSUB also won the National Championship in 1993-94 and another in the 1996-97 season.
CSU Bakersfield made 21 NCAA Tournament appearances at the Division II level during their 33-year history before moving to NCAA Division I status in 2006-07.
