BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Four CSU Bakersfield pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts as the Roadrunners swept a doubleheader from the University of Portland Friday at Hardt Field.

“I am really happy with our team how our team performed to earn two wins,” said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard.

GAME 1

The teams agreed to play seven innings to begin the twin bill. The Roadrunners scored all seven of their runs with two outs as CSUB defeated the Pilots 7-3.  Mark Pena’s two-RBI double in the bottom of the second gave the Roadrunners an early lead. The Pilots tied the score in the top of the fourth when a CSUB error extended the frame, resulting in a Ryan Hoogerwerf two-RBI double.

The Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. David Metzgar worked out a walk for an RBI and a 3-2 CSUB advantage.  The Pilots advanced runners to second and third with two outs in the top of the fifth before Mahlik Jones struck out Portland’s clean-up hitter Dutton Elske to quiet the threat.  CSUB struck again with two outs as Christian Deaton’s opposite field single to left plated two in the bottom of the fifth.

Hoogerwerf homered to left with one out in the top of the sixth. Matt Kelly walked with one out later in the frame. Nathen Dewsnap relieved Jones and gave up a hit to Chris Arpan on his first pitch. Grady Miller grounded out to short to get the ‘Runners out of the inning. The third Pilot error of the game prolonged the CSUB sixth. The Roadrunners took advantage as Ryan Grotjohn singled with the bases loaded to score a pair of runs.

Cody Hawken and Elske recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh. Justin Thaxton struck out to bring up Hoogerwerf who struck out to end the game.

Jones struck out a career high eight in 5.2 innings of work. Dewsnap struck out two in 1.1 innings for his second save. Grotjohn and Deaton both tallied two hits. Hawken (3) and Hoogerwerf combined for five of the eight UOP hits in the game.

“Dewsnap did a great job coming in and picking up the save,” Beard said.

GAME 2

CSUB overcame a three-run Portland first inning lead to defeat the Pilots 6-3. Hawken and Hoogerwerf connected on back-to-back home runs in the top of the first to give the Pilots a 3-0 lead. A Max Carter double in the bottom of the first plated David Metzgar and got the ‘Runners on the board.

Carter’s infield single in the third scored Metzgar for the second time. Brandon Heinrich walked with the bases loaded to tie the game with two outs in the third. Andrew Penner gave CSUB the lead in the bottom of the fourth on his opposite field single to right to score Junior Felix. Carter’s third RBI of the night scored Pena.  Camden Muller relieved Jordan Horak with two outs in the inning. His first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Penner to score.

Andrew Hansen, the Roadrunner starter went six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven before giving way to Kenny Johnson to start the seventh. Johnson retired the first four batters he faced prior to Hoogerwerf earning a single in the eighth. Johnson struck out Elske for out number two. Cal Webb grounded out to end the inning.

Johnson posted back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth before Michael Forgione reached on an error. Johnson bounced back to strike out Jordan Horak to earn the save. The Roadrunner duo would combine for 10 strikeouts (six for Johnson) and only walk one.

Carter was 3-for-4 with three RBI’s. Metzgar and Cole Valletta each charted two hits for the ‘Runners. Hoogerwerf recorded two of the eight Portland hits.

“I’m happy with the way Hansen bounced back after a rough first inning,” Beard said. “He did nothing but compete and make pitches from the point. Kenny came in and attacked the strike zone. We have some guys gaining confidence and momentum.”

Roadrunner pitchers have struck out 33 Pilot batters in the series, which concludes Saturday at 12 p.m.
