MALIBU, Calif.
- Junior Arianna Celis finished second overall as the CSUB cross country team
opened its 2009 season at the Malibu Oceanside Open hosted by Pepperdine
University on Tuesday. Celis finished the 5K course in 19:31.
Pepperdine won the meet, 21-38, and the Waves' Lauren Lodge was the individual
winner in 19:14.
"I am extremely happy about today's results," Head Coach
Robert Boyles said. "This was one of the tougher courses we will run this
season and I thought our team performed very well. This was the first
collegiate meet for many of our runners and I thought they did a great job of
handling it."
Junior Casey Glassey, who ran with Celis last season at
Riverside CC, finished fifth in 20:03.
Sophomore Judith Mata was ninth (20:27)
and freshman Cecilia Lopez was 15th (21:19).
"I thought our ability to break up the Pepperdine runners in
the standings was very encouraging," said Boyles. "Our times will get faster
but today I was more concerned with our placing than times. Today was a huge
step forward for our entire team."
CSUB will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the
Asics/UC Irvine Invitational.
