THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---For the second year in a row, No. 24 CSU Bakersfield won all four of its matches at the Cal Lutheran Tina Finali Invitational.
CSU Bakersfield defeated Occidental 18-1 in Saturday’s first match. CSUB led 7-1 after eight minutes, shutting out the Tigers for the rest of the match. The one goal allowed was the fewest by a CSUB team since Feb. 3, 2008 when the ‘Runners defeated Fresno Pacific 17-1.
Lindsey Paulson, Ashley Paz, and Devynn Stein each put up a hat trick. CSUB’s defense made 13 steals in the match. Goalies Courtney Wahlstrom and Ruby Versfeld combined for five saves. Versfeld also scored a goal on offense for the ‘Runners.
“We have been playing great defense,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We are looking to continue that in our next game.”
CSUB defeated the host Regals 11-3 to complete tournament play Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead. The Roadrunners shutout CLU in the second and third quarters. Wahlstrom captained the CSUB defense, making eight saves and six steals. Eight different CSUB players scored during the game.
“We had a great defensive weekend,” Gall said. “We were able to work on some things offensively. Every member of the team got good minutes this weekend and I continue to be impressed by our depth and the high level that everyone on our team can play at.”
CSUB (8-7) is 11-1 over the last three years at the Finali Invitational. The Roadrunners will be training with a team from the Chinese National program on Sunday and Monday at the Hillman Aquatic Center. The Roadrunners host No. 2 USC next Saturday at 1 p.m. before traveling to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara (12 p.m.).
