The Roadrunners earning ACWPC honors were Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) who was awarded “Superior” honors for maintaining a 3.59 GPA in her history major. Selected for “Excellent” honors (representing GPA between 3.20 and 3.40) were Bianca Adams (So., Ontario, Calif., St. Lucy’s Priory HS), Malia Pahoa (Sr., Lake Elsinore, Calif., Temescal Canyon HS), Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS), and Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS).
Joining Niki DeLeon, a driver from Montebello, Calif. (Montebello HS), who signed last Fall as newcomers to the Roadrunners’ program are Nicola Barrett, Makala Davis, and Tatiana Verdugo.
Barrett is a freshman from Cape Town, Africa who has served as a member of the South African U-18 and U-20 National Teams from 2009-11. She earned Western Province Colours honors seven times.
"Nicola is a left handed attacker who comes to us with extensive international experience, playing in such tournaments as the 2011 FINA Junior world championships,” Gall said. “Nicola has a great work ethic and will have an immediate impact on our program.”
Davis is from Hanford, Calif. where she earned Hanford High School’s 2011 Bullpup Legacy and Jim Coiner Awards. Vergudo, a native of Carpinteria, Calif., was named second team All-League as a senior after her Carpinteria High team won a league championship. She was selected second team All-CIF in 2010.
“Makala is a well rounded student athlete and will have a positive impact on our team both in and out of the water,” Gall said. “Tatiana comes to us from Carpentieria high school where she played varsity water polo and softball. Tatiana has played several different positions in the pool, from goalie, to defender, to attacker. She has a great arm which will gve us the good fortune of using her in a variety of different ways.”
CSUB begins its first season in the MPSF, women’s water polo’s premier conference in 2013. The first home MPSF match is set for Sunday, Mar. 10 against Arizona State.
