Tyler Iwamura (R-Jr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) got the meet off to a strong start for the Roadrunners as he defeated Jesse Meis via majority decision 15-3 at 125. Frank Lomas (R-Sr., Bakesfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) increased the CSUB lead to 10-0 when he pinned Sam Bauer seven second into the second period of the 133-pount match.
Northern Colorado’s Casey Cruz (141) and Justin Gonzales (149) won the next two matches to close the gap to 10-7. Anthony Box got a reversal against Charlie McMartin with no time remaining in the third period to send the 157-pound bout into overtime where Box took McMartin down with 38 seconds remaining for a 9-7 victory.
Gabe Burak defeated Adam Fierro (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) 7-0 at 165 to make 13-10. Brady Garner (R-Sr., Preston, Idaho, Portland State) earned an 8-4 decision against Josh VanTine at 174 for a six-point Roadrunner lead. Patrick Gomez won at 184 get the Bears to within two, 16-14. AC Brown (Fr., Oakdale, Calif., Oakdale HS) clinched the dual victory for CSUB with a 6-4 decision over Nick Bayer at 197. Henry Chirinio won the heavyweight bout for the final 19-17 score.
“We had some matches that were gutted out at the end,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “Box worked hard for the victory at 157. AC Brown, our true freshman at 197 came from behind to pick up the win. I saw a lot of areas to improve upon. I also saw a lot of improvement today.”
The Roadrunners return to the mats Jan. 29 when CSUB hosts Arizona State in the final Pac 12 dual of the season at 2 p.m.
