American (1-1) is led by Clovis North alum Ryan Flores. Flores has been ranked as the No. 1 heavyweight by InterMat since Nov. 29. Flores, a returning All-American, is 5-0 this season and has won 16 of his last 17 matches dating back to last season. In addition to Flores, three other Eagles are nationally ranked by Intermat in Ganbayar Sanjaa (No. 4, 157), Matt Mariacher (No. 14, 141), and Daniel Mitchell (No. 14, 197).
"We are excited to be competing in Clovis," said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. "It is a great wrestling community and we have a few of our guys from that area. American is a very good team and that dual will be tough and challenging for our guys."
Boise State will travel to Bakersfield on Friday for a 7 p.m. Pac 12 dual. The Broncos are 0-4 on the year, 0-2 in Pac 12 action. On Sunday, Boise State is at Cal Poly. Boise has four wrestlers in the Intermat polls in Jake Swartz (No. 12, 184), Georgi Ivanov (No. 15, 157), Josh Strait (No. 16, 141), and J.T. Felix (No. 19, 285).
Both American and Boise State will be facing the Roadrunners, Cal Poly, and Stanford this week. American starts its California swing with CSUB, travels to Cal Poly on Friday, and Stanford on Sunday. The Broncos are at Stanford Thursday, CSUB Friday, and Cal Poly Sunday.
Tyler Iwamura (R-Jr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christan HS) turned in the top performance for CSUB at the Dec. 28-29 Ken Kraft Midlands Championship. Iwamura lost in the consolation round of 16 on day two of the 49th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
Iwamura was awarded the 10th seed at 125 pounds and opened the meet with a 5-4 victory over Clarion's Trye HIcks. In the round of 16, Iwamura faced the sixth seed, Joe Roth of Central Michigan. Roth, who is 18th in the current Intermatwrestle.com rankings, defeated Iwamura 18-6.
In Iwamura's first consolation match, he pinned Luther College's Daniel Mendoza with 15 seconds remaining in the match. Round three of the consolation bracket saw Iwamura take on Rider College's Chuck Zeisloff. Iwamura pinned Zeisloff to advance to the consolation round of 16 where he will face the No. 1 seed, Illinois' Jesse Delgado. Delgado, who entered the tournament ranked No. 6 in Division I at 125, defeated Iwamura 11-7.
