No. 20 Cal Poly Defeats CSU Bakersfield 28-10
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — No. 20 Cal Poly (1-0, 1-0 Pac 12) defeated CSU Bakersfield (1-2, 0-2 Pac 12) 28-10 in a Pac 12 dual Friday night in the Icardo Center.
Tyler Iwamura (R-Jr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) opened the night for the Roadrunners by winning his eight consecutive match, a 2-0 decision over Britain Longmire at 125 pounds. Jose Mendoza (R-Fr., Selma, Calif., Selma HS) gave CSUB a 6-0 advantage with his 5-3 133-pound victory over Brandon Rocha.
Dalton Kelley (R-So., Alamosa, Colo., Alamosa HS) scored a 13-2 major decision against Jake Tannebaum at 141 for a 10-0 Roadrunners’ advantage. Boris Novachkov, the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, moved up a weight and defeated Nicholas Cano (Fr., San Jose, Calif., St. Francis HS) 9-4 for the first Mustangs’ victory of the night.
In a battle of former Bakersfield High School teammates Travis Rasmussen pinned Anthony Box (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) 1:23 into the 157-pound match to make it 10-9. Dominic Kastl put Cal Poly into the lead for good when he defeated Adam Fierro (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) 3-2 in the 165-pound matchup.
The Mustangs would sweep the final four matches, earning a decision at 174, major decisions at 184 and 197 to go along with a technical fall at heavyweight.
“I thought we received some really good perfomances tonight,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “We got off to a good start with our more experience guys at the lower weights. Wrestling true freshmen at 149, 165, 184, 197, and 285 showed our youth, but I thought with some simple adjustments we should improve and contend.”
The Roadrunners are off until Dec. 2-3 when CSUB travels to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational.
