BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2016-17 season is about to kick off for CSU Bakersfield women’s golf team as the Roadrunners are set to tackle the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by Wyoming will take place in Palm Desert, Calif. at the Classic Club, Oct. 1-2.

“I’m really excited to get our competitive fall season going,” said Meghan Thomason, Director of Golf at CSUB and Head Coach of the women’s golf team. “Everyone on the roster worked really hard over the summer and arrived to campus ready to go. We had some success at Classic Club last year and I think the team will be really comfortable on the golf course since they know what to expect. It’s a really good field, so, I’m excited to see how we play.”

The field will feature twelve teams including the 'Runners playing the par 72, 6,112-yard course. A year ago, CSUB posted its fifth-best 54-hole team score all-time (963) at the Classic Club. The 2016-17 edition of the ‘Runners will be looking to better that result in the first tournament of the season.

Leading the way for the ‘Runners will be a trio of returners in juniors Julia Stewart, Tori Peers, and Ariel Lee. “I have high expectations for three our returners who will be teeing it up in the desert this weekend,” said Thomason. “I know they are motivated to improve on their scoring averages from last season and the rest of the team is looking to them for leadership.”

Thomason went on to say that two of the newest ‘Runners round out the squad for Wyoming’s West Coast tournament: “I’m excited to see what April Chang and Macey Mills do, as well. This is the first Division I tournament for both of them and I think they will show everyone that they belong out here.”

A shotgun start will commence both Saturday’s and Sunday’s action at 7:30 a.m. The teams will play two rounds of golf on Day 1 before wrapping up on Sunday with a final 18 holes. Live stats will be available for the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate and can be accessed from the CSUB women’s golf schedule page.
