FRESNO, Calif. – Saturday proved to be another big day of competition for CSU Bakersfield’s Paola Hernandez as the senior swimmer continued to pace the Roadrunners at Fresno State’s Chick-fil-A Invitational.
“Paola had another big day and her 100 free time was most impressive,” said Chris Hansen, Director of Swimming at CSUB. “This was a big time this early in the season. Paola finished the meet with our team’s fastest times in the 50, 100, and 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM. She is on fire.”
Hernandez led the ‘Runners in both the 400 medley and 400 free relays on Saturday. The senior from Lompoc, Calif. also finished third overall among 50 student-athletes in the 100 free with a time of 51.94.
Hansen went on to compliment his younger group of student-athletes as well: “The freshman ladies showed up to play today. Jayssie Haynes, Alyssa Madero, Morgan King, and Maddie Cosgrove all scored for us today. All of their times are really close to what we lost last year to graduation.”
Madero placed 13th in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.00 on Saturday. King’s time of 53.50 in the 100 free was good enough for 14th in Fresno. Haynes posted a mark of 2:26.91 in the 200 breast to place 10th and edge senior teammate Dylana Milobar by almost half a second. Cosgrove’s time of 2:08.50 in the 200 fly placed the freshman eighth overall of 25 student-athletes.
“We are a young team and need to work on some stroke technique,” Hansen said. “Our freshmen are still a little timid. We are going to work on becoming more mentally tough as well as some race technique in the next couple of months. This was a great meet to start out the season. I’m excited to see us grow.”
As a team, CSUB finished sixth of six teams with 281 points. Boise State was the team leader after Saturday’s competition wrapped up. Results from this weekend’s meet are available in the linked PDFs.
The Roadrunners will resume their season next weekend when the men join the ladies for the Malibu Invitational. The meet hosted by Pepperdine will run Oct. 14-15 in Malibu, Calif.
