BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2016-17 swimming and diving season kicks off this weekend for CSU Bakersfield with the Chick-fil-A Invitational hosted by Fresno State. The two-day meet will take place Oct. 7-8 as the Roadrunner women will dive into the water first before the men join them the following weekend.

“The women will have an uphill battle this year after losing an amazing class to graduation,” said Chris Hansen, CSUB’s Director of Swimming. “This young team will have to rely on Paola Hernandez, Carlee Burks, and Dylana Milobar to guide them with their maturity, strengths, and leadership qualities. We are young, but I do believe we can mature into an amazing team by the WAC Championships.”

Hernandez, Burks, and Milobar all played large parts in the success CSUB had at least year’s Western Athletic Conference championships. As a team, the ‘Runners brought home three relay titles while Burks earned all-conference honors on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. The trio figures to play key roles again in 2016-17.

Hansen went on to highlight this weekend’s invitational in Fresno, which will feature a solid field of competitors: “Opening with the Fresno State Invite is a big move for us. Besides Fresno State, Nevada, Boise State, San Jose, and San Diego State will all be in attendance. These are all powerhouse teams and we will have to be at our best.”

The Chick-fil-A invite will start Friday, Oct. 7, with a pair of sessions. The first session will begin at 11 a.m. with the second session set for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Saturday’s swimming and diving action is slated for a 10 a.m. start with only one session planned.
