OREM, Utah – CSU Bakersfield’s softball team fell to Utah Valley on Saturday, dropping its Western Athletic Conference road series two games to one. The Roadrunners were defeated in six innings by a score of 9-1 in the series finale.
After a quiet first inning, Utah Valley exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Wolverines tallied seven hits and utilized a CSUB error to take a 7-0 lead over the ‘Runners.
After the second, both pitching staffs quieted the opposing defenses as CSUB’s Summer Evans held the Wolverines scoreless in her 2.2 innings pitched. CSUB finally broke through for its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. After Nadia Amezcua doubled to put a ‘Runner in scoring position, Chris Hipa drove her teammate in with a double of her own.
Down 7-1, the ‘Runners gave up two runs to the Wolverines in the bottom of the sixth as Utah Valley took the run-rule victory. UVU’s Lauren Frailey earned the complete-game win, giving up just three hits and one walk to the ‘Runners.
Senior Lyndsay Klimenko (1-9) took the loss in the circle after pitching an inning and a third against UVU. Hipa led the ‘Runner offense on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Amezcua was 1-for-2 with a walk against the Wolverines.
Next week, the Roadrunners (6-25, 1-5 WAC) will hit the road for another WAC series. CSU Bakersfield will take on Grand Canyon, Apr. 14-15, in a three-game series. Friday will feature an evening doubleheader between the ‘Runners and Lopes while Saturday will be a single game to close out the series.
