AUSTIN, Texas – CSU Bakersfield's track and field team was represented by two Roadrunners at the NCAA West Preliminary meet on Saturday, May 27. Tim Van Horn and Joselito Flores both competed in the men's high jump among the top 48 student-athletes in the West Region, placing 40th and 41st, respectively.

“Tim and Jose both had an excellent season,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, CSUB's Director of Track and Field. “I'm very proud of them and know their best is in front of them.”

After a year without any ‘Runner going to the NCAA Regionals, Mansur-Wentworth sent a pair of ‘Runners for the second time in three years. Van Horn and Flores both posted big personal records during the course of the season in order to earn a qualifying spot for the 2017 West Preliminary.

Van Horn, a sophomore, recorded a career-best mark of 6-11.50 this season to move into a tie for fifth all-time in CSUB history. The mark was the best for any ‘Runner since 1999. Flores came in just half of an inch behind his teammate as the junior jumped 6-11.00 and is eighth on CSUB's Top 20 all-time list.

On Saturday in Texas, the bar started out at 6-06.75. Van Horn cleared the height on his second attempt while Flores needed all three leaps. The bar then moved to 6-08.75 and the pair each cleared it on their third and final attempts. With another two-inch increase, both ‘Runners were unable to clear 6-10.75.

As Van Horn used one less attempt than his teammate, the sophomore placed 40th overall while Flores was 41st on Saturday. The height of 6-08.75 was Flores' second-best of the season and tied Van Horn's third-best.

The 2017 track and field season has come to an end for CSU Bakersfield as only the Top 12 student-athletes in each event advance to the NCAA Championships. As a sophomore and a junior, Van Horn and Flores still have more time to improve and will begin working immediately to prepare for the 2018 season.

Full results will be made available later in the evening on Saturday. In the meantime, live stats are available at this link.
