BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield track and field program has at least one meet remaining in the 2016-17 season as two Roadrunners will compete in the NCAA West Regional meet this weekend. CSUB's top two high jumpers, Tim Van Horn and Joselito Flores, will represent the ‘Runners against the West's top student-athletes in Austin, Texas on May 27.
“Tim and Jose have qualified for their first-ever postseason meet,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field at CSUB. “I am very proud of the hard work they have put in to get to this point and I hope it will be a great experience.”
Van Horn and Flores qualified for this week's NCAA Regional by posting one of the Top 48 marks in the West in the high jump. In order to advance to the NCAA Championships next month, student-athletes must finish in the Top 12 in their Regional meet.
With a personal record jump of 6-11.50 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, Van Horn qualified for Regionals 31st overall in the West. His mark was good enough to tie for fifth all-time in CSUB history and made the native of Gilroy, Calif. the top seed in the Western Athletic Conference. The sophomore went on to earn the conference title at the WAC Outdoor Championships, May 10-13, and has great momentum heading into the NCAA Regionals this weekend.
Flores, a native of Fairfield, Calif., reset his high jump PR on Mar. 18 at the Northridge Invitational. The junior cleared the bar at 6-11.00 and is now ranked eighth on CSUB's Top 20 all-time list. Flores was ranked second in the WAC heading into the championships, but was injured while competing in the long jump the day before the high jump. He is now healthy and ready to represent the ‘Runners in Texas.
CSUB is sending a pair of ‘Runners to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in the last three years. Bryan Wilmert and Karnell Grimes represented Bakersfield in 2015. Before then, CSUB had not sent more than one ‘Runner to the West Regional in its Division I history (since 2007-08).
The men's high jump at the NCAA West Regional is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 27, at 4 p.m. (PT). For links to live stats, a live stream of the competition, and more information, visit the Meet Central page.
