LOS ANGELES – The Roadrunner outdoor track and field team opened the 2017 season this weekend at the Cal State LA Invitational on Saturday. CSU Bakersfield had several student-athletes post personal best marks while multiple ‘Runners joined or moved up in the CSUB Top 20 all-time rankings.

“It was a very solid opener,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field at CSUB. “We had 17 Top 10 finishes. Susannah and Julianne led the way for the women. Both finished second in their events. Curt was second in the 800 after running in the 1500. Joselito and Justin got two Top 7 finishes each. Alec was third in the javelin and it was a great opener for the guys. Falon was also solid in the 100 and Tristan had his best 110 hurdles opener.”


To open the meet on Friday, junior Micaiah Lugo placed third overall among 30 student-athletes in the discus. Lugo’s best toss of 123-05 came on her third attempt of the day. Junior Susannah Vera finished second overall in the high jump with a season-best mark of 5-02.50.

Freshman Irma Torres led the CSUB distance runners in the 1500m race on Saturday. The native of Bakersfield crossed the line 46th out of 89 women with a time of 5:06.94. Fellow freshman Paradise Pelzer (5:09.22) and junior Angel Valdez (5:09.77) were close behind Torres.

Freshman Falon Wilson took her first attempt at the 100m hurdles and posted a time of 15.20 to finish eighth overall. The Bakersfield native’s time ranks her 18th all-time for CSUB. Wilson went on to join the CSUB Top 20 in the 100m dash as well, posting a time of 12.32, good for fourth in Los Angeles and 18th all-time for the ‘Runners. Freshman Mariah LeSure was close behind Wilson in the 100m dash at 12.69.


Freshman Nick Zandes recorded the seventh-best mark in CSUB pole vault history on Saturday. Zandes’ height of 13-09.25 in Los Angeles helped the Bakersfield native finish 18th overall.

On Friday, redshirt senior Emmett Wirtz posted his best mark of the day in the hammer throw on his first attempt. The native of Ridgecrest, Calif. threw 149-09 in his first competition of the season to place fifth among 30 men. Sophomore Luis Mendez placed 20th with a mark of 121-09, just four feet short of his personal best. Wirtz went on to PR in the shot put on Saturday, posting a best throw of 44-03.25 to finish seventh.

Freshman Curt Threlkeld crossed the line 31st out of 98 men in the 1500m race with a time of 4:11.58. The Bakersfield native also finished second overall among 67 student-athletes in the 800m. His time of 1:57.53 is just over two seconds outside of CSUB’s Top 5 all-time list in just his first collegiate attempt.

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Gabe Gaeta placed seventh with a new personal best time of 55.23. Gaeta remains ranked 20th all-time for the ‘Runners in the event.

Three ‘Runners finished in the Top 15 in the 110m hurdles on Saturday with Tristan Watson leading the way. The junior placed fifth with a time of 14.98, just over a tenth of a second off of his personal best. Freshman Nick Zandes (16.13) and redshirt junior Dayan Oduma (16.19) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Watson also posted a new PR in the 200m dash (22.73) to finish 26th.

CSUB’s high jump trio of Joselito Flores, Justin McKinley, and Tim Van Horn all went over six feet in their season opener. Flores’ 6-05.50 led the ‘Runners as the junior finished in third place.

The Roadrunners will have next weekend off before returning to track and field action. On Saturday, Mar. 18, CSU Bakersfield will head to the Northridge Invitational hosted by CSUN.
