BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Behind a combined 32 points from returners Brent Wrapp and Dedrick Basile the CSUB Roadrunners shook off a slow first-half start to pull away from The Master’s University Wednesday night in an 82-63 exhibition win.
Wrapp led CSUB with 17 while Basile had 15 for CSUB in the victory. The Roadrunners trailed by five points in the first half before Wrapp sank one of his team-high three three-pointers to give CSUB the lead for good with just over eight minutes remaining. That sparked a 9-3 run and CSUB would lead at the half 39-32.
“This was their (Master’s) sixth game together and it’s our first so they were a little bit better, a little more fine-tuned, a little better conditioned than we are,” said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. “I thought the adjustments we made at halftime were good for us and now we get a chance to go back to the drawing board and work, get better and come back out here Saturday and hopefully be better than we were tonight.”
The second half started much more promising for the Roadrunners as their trademark-defense put pressure on the Mustangs while forcing 21 turnovers and combining for 19 steals. The Roadrunners scored 25 points off turnovers and outrebounded Master’s 42-30 while scoring 42 points in the paint.
CSUB stretched the lead to as many as 27 in the second half behind key shots from Basile and newcomer Shon Briggs who added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
“He [Briggs] has been scoring it in practice and he’s really done a great job adding some scoring to us and I was pleased with the way he played, he’s really a good basketball player,” Barnes said. “As the season goes on he’s going to get better and better.”
The Master’s cut the lead to as few as 17 when Travis Yenor made three late three-pointers for the Mustangs. He along with two other teammates led the Mustangs with 12 points.
CSUB will return to action Saturday night in their official home opener vs. San Diego Christian at 7 P.M.
