BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Men’s basketball will open their 2016-17 season this week with an exhibition Wednesday night against The Master’s University and an official season opener on Saturday night against San Diego Christian at the Icardo Center.

The Roadrunners return six players from last season’s NCAA Tournament team and feature a stable of talented newcomers as CSUB looks for back-to-back Western Athletic Conference championships and another crack at the NCAA Tournament.

First, the Roadrunners must handle their preseason opponents starting with Wednesday’s exhibition against The Master’s University. Although the records nor the stats for this game will count towards the season totals, it will be one final tune up for CSUB before opening their regular season against San Diego Christian on Saturday.

The Master’s opened their season with a pair of wins last week at the West Coast Baptist Tournament held in Lancaster, Calif. The Mustangs, under new head coach Kelvin Starr, defeated University of Antelope Valley 83-74 on Friday night to open their season before defeating West Coast Baptist Saturday night 108-97.

With several upperclassmen and junior transfers on their new roster, the Mustangs are led by Liberty University-transfer Hansel Atencia who scored 35 points in Saturday’s win and leads Master’s with 19 points per contest. Lower Columbia CC-transfer guard Lawrence Russell is averaging 18 through the first two contests for The Master’s.

CSUB’s leading-scorers returning from last season are senior guard Dedrick Basile and redshirt sophomore guard Damiyne Durham, both of which averaged 12 points per game last season. Jaylin Airington returns for his senior campaign following a junior year that including 10 points and four rebounds per contest for CSUB.

Wednesday night’s game will tip off at 7 P.M. and can be heard on Newstalk 1180 and 96.1 FM KERN beginning at 6:30 with the Dignity Health Pregame Show. Live video will also be available through the Roadrunner Sports Network at .
