BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield opened the Roadrunner Classic with a 3-1 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Thursday night in the Icardo Center.
The Roadrunners opened the match with a 25-21 set one victory before falling 25-23 to the Hawks in set No. 2. CSUB hit .524 (12-1-21) in set three for a 25-15 win. The Roadrunner defense limited UMES to six kills and a -.148 hitting percentage in the final set for a 25-15 victory.
Debora Araujo (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) paced CSUB with 14 kills (14-5-26 for a .346 hitting percentage), six digs, and three blocks. Molly O'Hagan (So. Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) charted 10 kills and five blocks. Fernanda Goncalves (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) dished out 41 assists (on 47 of the CSUB kills). Goncalves was an effective hitter as she had five kills in seven attempts for a .714 hitting percentage. She also posted four digs and three service aces.
"We really focused on the end line, keeping the pressure on the end line and getting them out of system," said CSUB head coach Jolene Shepardson. "They’re a talented team and they’re really hard to defend when they’re in system so we were just keeping the pressure on them. (We) were super excited about tonight, tomorrow is going to be even bigger, it’s a Friday night and now we’ve got one under our belts."
The Roadrunner Classic continues Friday when UMES faces Utah Valley at 12:30 p.m. followed by UMES facing CSUB again at 7 p.m.
