RENO, Nev. — The CSUB baseball team surrendered 13 runs on 17 hits and four fielding errors Sunday, falling 13-6 to University of Nevada at Peccole Park in Reno.

The Wolf Pack (21-20) earned the series sweep over the Roadrunners, who fell to 8-29 on the season.

Bakersfield’s offense got going in the second as Richard Escalera led off with a single up the middle. Stuart Smith singled through the left side and Kyle Richardson loaded the bases on a bunt single. Martin Medina then drove in Escalera on a sacrifice fly to center field. The rally looked to continue when Garrett Brankse was hit by pitch to reload the bases, but Smith was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice to first and Brandon Boren foul flied out to first.

Nevada scored its first three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits and a Bakersfield fielding error, then took advantage of another error in the fourth to tack on three more runs to lead 6-1. The game really began to slip away from the Roadrunners when Nevada added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, taking a commanding 11-1 advantage.

In the seventh, the Roadrunners came alive against relievers Branden Petrangelo and Jayson McClaren, collecting five runs on five hits and one error to cut the deficit to 11-6. Branske started things off by reaching on a hit by pitch and Joey Mills followed with a walk. Matthew Akiyama single through the right side to load the bases and Ryan McIntyre hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Branske. Mills also scored on an error on the throw from center field to third.

Jeremy Rodriguez continued the rally with a single through the right side, Derek Geisinger singled to the left field line, plating Akiyama and Smith walked to load up the bases for a second time. That forced Nevada to go back to the bullpen, replacing Petrangelo with McClaren, who gave up RBI singles to Eric Sanchez and JJ Henry before retiring the next two batters with a strikeout and ground out.

The Wolf Pack added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final seven-run spread.

Bakersfield starter Mickey Jannis (0-7) struck out three while surrendering 13 hits for nine runs, six earned, in five innings. Relievers Sam Jones, Korie Walkley and Jason Kudlock combined for four strikeouts, one walk and four hits in three innings.

Richardson and McIntyre had two hits apiece for the Roadrunners who stranded a dozen runners on base.

Derek Achelpohl (4-3) earned the win for the Wolf Pack, striking out three and scattering six hits for one run in six innings of work. Nevada’s offense was paced by a 4-for-5 performance from Matt Bowman, who also added two RBIs and two runs. Nick Melino had three hits while three others had two hits each.

The Roadrunners make a short trip to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, then return to Hardt Field Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match-up against Loyola Marymount.
