RENO, Nev. — With two outs in the ninth, the CSUB baseball team rallied with a walk, two singles and a double for two runs, but it was not enough after giving up 12 hits and 10 walks in game-two of a three-game series at University of Nevada, resulting in a 9-4 loss to the Wolf Pack Saturday at Pecolle Park.

Using some aggressive and heads-up base running, the Wolf Pack (20-20) tallied a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning. With one out, Westley Moss singled through the left side, stole second, stole third and scored on a Shaun Kort single down the left field line. In an attempted rundown to catch Kort stealing second, Roadrunner first baseman Richard Escalera was called for defensive interference and Kort was awarded second base. He then advanced to third on a Nick Melino fielder’s choice and scored on a Brett Hart double to center.

Bakersfield (8-28) tied the score in the fourth with runs scored by Jason Kudlock and Ryan McIntyre on an Escalera infield single. Kudlock led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. McIntyre and Kyle Richardson each walked to load the bases for Escalera. With two outs, Escalera hit an infield pop-up, but Nevada’s second baseman Joe Kohan lost the ball in the sun, allowing Kudlock and McIntyre to race home.

Nevada began to break the game open in the bottom of the inning, using four hits and a walk to score three runs. After a leadoff single, followed by a walk, Matt Bowman knocked a two-RBI double into center field. Bowman then scored on Kort’s second RBI single of the game, giving the Wolf Pack a 5-2 lead. Nevada tacked on one more in the fifth on an RBI double to left-center by Kevin Rodland, and two in the seventh courtesy of a fielder’s choice, a single and five walks. The ninth run of the game came on a Kohan sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Jonathan Montoya (3-4) took the loss for Bakersfield, striking out three, walking four and giving up 10 hits for six runs in six innings. Relievers Brandon Van Dam, Jacob Valenzuela and Garrett Branske combined for one strikeout, six walks and two hits allowed.

JJ Henry and Joey Mills had a pair of hits each while Brandon Boren, Jeremy Rodrigeuz, Kudlock, Escalera rounded out the Roadrunners’ seven hits. Escalera and Mills had two RBI’s each.

Wolf Pack starter Chris Garcia (3-4) issued seven strikeouts along with three walks and four hits in 7 1/3 innings, caliming his third win of the season. At the plate, Kohan and Hart collected three hits apiece while Hart and Kort had RBIs each.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. at Peccole Park.
