SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Brandon Boren launched a grand slam to right field as part of a seven-run fifth inning for the CSUB baseball team, but a pair of UC Santa Barbara unearned runs in the eighth gave the Gauchos a 8-7 win over the Roadrunners Wednesday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

With winds blowing at 26 mph and gusting up to nearly 40 mph from the third base line straight out to right field, Boren’s homer was one of three in the game that went sailing over the right field fence.

UC Santa Barbara’s Gunnar Terhune led of the game with a walk, advanced to second on a balk, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Brian Gump. Eric Oliver lined a shot straight back to CSUB pitcher Jonathan Montoya who doubled Gump off first for the double play, then Shane Carlson grounded out Montoya for the final out.

In the top of the fifth, Martin Medina led off with a walk and Richard Escalera singled through the right side to put runners on the corners for Bakersfield. Kyle Richardson followed with a sacrifice fly to center, sending Medina home and tying the score. Derek Geisinger and Joey Mills each walked to load the bases for Brandon Boren who launched a grand slam over the right field fence to put the Roadrunners ahead 5-1.

After a Ryan McIntyre ground out, the rally continued when Jeremy Rodriguez was hit by pitch, Jason Kudlock singled to left and Medina launched a two-RBI triple to the right-center field fence. UC Santa Barbara finally ended the bleeding when Escalera struck out swinging for the final out.

The Gauchos (20-10) got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run to right by John DeAlba, then loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a fielding error by Medina, drawing a pitching change by the Roadrunners. With two outs, Erik Draxton replaced Montoya and quickly drew a fielder’s choice ground out.

A pair of singles through the right side put runners on first and second for UCSB in the bottom of the sixth for Bryce Tafelski who hit the third home run of the game over the right field fence as the Gauchos pulled to within one, 7-6. Draxton then struck out DeAlba and got Terhune and Gump to ground out to short and first, respectively, to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Eric Oliver reached on a fielding error by Medina, Carlson walked and Matt Valaika singled to short to load the bases. Ryan Cavan sent the tying run home with a sacrifice fly to center and Steve Cook’s fielder’s choice to second allowed Carlson to cross home plate, putting the Gauchos ahead, 8-7. Draxton walked Tafelski before being replaced by Sam Jones, who struck out DeAlba for the third out.

Bakersfield (8-25) challenged one more time in the top of the ninth when Joey Mills was hit by pitch and stole second and third, but advanced no further as a strikeout and ground out ended the inning.

For the Roadrunners, Montoya struck out two, walked four and allowed three hits for three runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Draxton (1-5) took the loss, giving up four hits and three earned runs in two innings, while Jones struck out three and did not allow a hit or a run in the final 1 1/3 innings.
