FRESNO, Calif. — Freshman southpaw Jonathan Montoya pitched the Roadrunners’ first ever complete game and a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, including a home run by Mick Gaston, led the CSUB baseball team to a huge 4-3 win over Fresno State Saturday at Beiden Field.
The win was a huge monkey off the backs of the Roadrunners squad, snapping a 13-game losing streak that dated back to a 9-7 victory over the University of Portland on Mar. 11.
Montoya (3-2) fanned seven, walked four and allowed just five hits for three runs in nine complete innings against the defending national champion Bulldogs. After his offense took the lead in the top of the ninth, Montoya drew a ground out by Dusty Robinson, walked Jake Johnson and got Danny Grubb to pop up to short. Looking for one final out, Montoya took care of business on his own, striking out leadoff hitter Brennan Gowens on a full count swing-and-a-miss to capture the complete-game victory.
Fresno State (15-12) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when Gowens walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by CSUB catcher Jeremy Rodriguez and scored on a Tom Mendonca single.
Martin Medina led off the second inning with a double to left and Gaston singled to left center to put runners on the corners for Stuart Smith who reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to second base. Bakersfield (5-20) added another run in the third when Joey Mills drove a first-pitch double down the left field line, then scored when Brandon Boren knocked a single to shallow right field.
Fresno State tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth when Steve Detwiler was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a double to left by Dusty Robinson and scored on a ground out by Grubb.
The Bulldogs then went up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter Johnson led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. Montoya drew a fly out from Grubb for one out, then, after walking Gowens, threw Danny Muno out at first on a sacrifice bunt for the second out. Alan Ahmady then grounded out to third base to end the inning.
Fresno State threatened again in the eighth when Gavin Hedstrom knocked a one-out single to center. But Detwiler was unable to make contact on a hit-and-run call and Hedstrom was thrown out attempting to advance to second. Detwiler then grounded out to third, setting up the Roadrunners’ final at-bats.
With a new pitcher on the mound in the form of closer Taylor Garrison, designated hitter Gaston tied the game with a leadoff solo shot to deep left center. Garrison then drew a ground out from Stuart Smith and a fly out from Richard Escalera. But Mills kept the inning alive, knocking a ground ball to Fresno State third baseman Mendonca, who threw the ball away on the play at first, allowing Mills to reach second. With the momentum back in the hands of the Roadrunners, Brandon Boren doubled to right center on an 0-1 pitch, sending the speedy Mills around the bases and across home plate for the game-winning run.
Boren finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Rodriguez and Gaston also had two hits apiece. For the game, Bakersfield out-hit the Bulldogs 8-to-5, including five extra-base hits.
Bakersfield and Fresno State match-up for the third game of the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Beiden Field. The teams will then travel to Bakersfield for two more games, Tuesday at Wednesday, each scheduled for 2 p.m. at Hardt Field.
