SAN JOSE, Calif. — After being held to just two hits and three runs in the first eight innings of play, the CSUB baseball team rallied for seven runs on five hits in the ninth against a trio of San Jose State relievers, but a 10-run deficit heading into the inning was too much to overcome in a 13-10 loss at Municipal Stadium Saturday.

San Jose State (18-5) scored three runs each in the second, third, fourth and seventh and one in the eighth to go ahead 13-3.

Brandon Boren and Mick Gaston blasted a pair of home runs for the Roadrunners (4-16), but San Jose State starter Max Peterson kept the rest of the lineup in check as the only other baserunners reached by walk (three) or hit by pitch (one) for the first eight innings.

The Roadrunner offense got going against Spartan relievers Tyler Green, Ryan Vander Tuig, and Esteban Guzman, tagging the trio for seven runs in the ninth. Martin Medina led off the inning with a single up the middle and Stuart Smith followed with a single through the right side. Kyle Richardson walked to load the bases and Ryan McIntyre delivered with a two-RBI double down the right field line.

Derek Geisinger and Gaston hit back-to-back sacrifice flies, cutting the spread to 13-7. Eric Sanchez singled to left and walks by Boren and Garrett Branske loaded the bases for Medina who blasted a bases-clearing triple to left, putting the ‘Runners to within three. But Guzman was finally able to end the rally, drawing a strikeout by Smith.

Medina finished with three RBIs on a pair of hits, while Boren, Gaston, Smith, McIntyre and Sanchez each had a hit. Designated hitter Karson Klauer had the hot bat for the Spartans, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a home run. Five other Spartans had two hits each.

After allowing just one baserunner in the first inning, Bakersfield starter Jonathon Montoya (2-2) gave up 11 hits for nine runs in 3 2/3 innings. Spenser Messmore and Korie Walkley combined for 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing six hits for four runs.

Peterson (5-0) completed eight innings on the mound for the Spartans, striking out six, walking three and allowing just two hits.

The Spartans and Roadrunners conclude their three-game series Sunday at Municipal Stadium. First pitch for game two is scheduled for 1 p.m.
