SAN JOSE, Calif. — Martin Medina sparked a three-run sixth inning for the CSUB baseball team, but San Jose State used 11 hits and two Roadrunner errors to post eight runs across the board as the Spartans took an 8-4 win at Municipal Stadium Friday.
San Jose State (17-5) scored a pair of unearned runs in the first, one on a balk and one on a ground out by Danny Stienstra. The Spartans added to their lead in the second when Karson Klauer’s double to center plated Hertler who reached base after being hit by pitch.
Bakersfield (4-15) cut the deficit to 3-1 with a solo run in the third. Freshman Eric Sanchez led off the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a fielding error by SJSU shortstop Kyle Bellows, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Mills, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Boren.
The Spartans tallied three consecutive hits to load the bases in the bottom of the third before a fielding error by Roadrunner third baseman JJ Henry allowed Jason Martin to score. Corey Valine grounded into a double play, but Stienstra scored on the play, pushing the San Jose State lead to 5-1.
Medina blasted a two-run homer in a big sixth inning as the Roadrunners climbed to within one. After Boren led off with a strikeout, Ryan McIntyre singled up the middle, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Stuart Smith. Jeremy Rodriguez then reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop, while Smith was out on the play. That brought Medina to the plate where he launched the 1-1 pitch over the center field wall, tallying his team leading fifth homer of the season.
San Jose State responded in the bottom of the sixth, however, scoring two runs on four hits before Anthony Aguilera grounded into a double play to end the innings. The Spartans added one more insurance run in the eighth for the final four-run spread.
Mickey Jannis (0-4) went seven full innings for Bakersfield, fanning six, walking four and giving up 10 hits for seven runs, four of which were earned. Sam Jones walked two and allowed one hit and one run in one inning of relief.
For San Jose State, David Berner improved to 5-0 and pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out 12 and scattering five hits for four runs.
The Spartans and Roadrunners continue their three-game series Saturday at Municipal Stadium. First pitch for game two is scheduled for 1 p.m.
