BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB baseball team scored a season-high 15 runs on 12 hits, but were slightly outdone by No. 12 Cal Poly’s 15 hits for 18 runs in an offensive battle to close out the four-game series Monday at Hardt Field.
The 18-15 win for the Mustangs was their sixth-straight, improving their overall record to 15-4. The Roadrunners fell to 4-14 on the season.
Bakersfield held a 15-14 lead after five complete innings, but Cal Poly pushed a pair of runners across home plate in both the eighth and ninth, while relievers Mark DeVincenzi and Eric Massingham held the ‘Runners to just two hits and no runs in the final four innings.
Cal Poly opened the game with a pair of unearned runs in the first and added another run in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Bakersfield responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, courtesy of a two-run homer by Martin Medina.
The Roadrunner rally continued in the third as Ryan McIntyre blasted a two-run homer to right, and after loading the bases with three consecutive walks, Medina was hit by a pitch to send Stuart Smith home. Designated hitter Mick Gaston followed with an RBI single to center, and an Eric Sanchez walk scored the fifth run, giving CSUB a 7-3 advantage.
Cal Poly added six runs in the fourth to reclaim the lead, only to see Bakersfield respond with a four-run inning of their own. The Mustangs added five more in the fifth, but the Roadrunners’ streak continued as well, taking their third lead of the game, 15-14.
Beginning in the sixth, however, Cal Poly’s pitchers were able to hold the ‘Runner offense in check, while it’s own offense came up with some big hits to take the lead back for good.
With one out in the eighth, Adam Buschini tripled and Matt Jensen followed with an RBI single. Wes Dorrell singled to left and Jensen advanced to third on a fielding error by CSUB left fielder Stuart Smith. Jensen was then able to score on a D.J. Gentile fielder’s choice to put the Mustangs up 16-15.
In the ninth, Ross Brayton hit a one-out single up the middle and Kyle Smith reached on a fielding error by CSUB right fielder Jason Kudlock, which moved the runners to second and third. Ryan Lee then laid down a squeeze bunt, scoring Brayton and Bobby Crocker’s RBI single to left field accounted for the final run.
While the Roadrunner pitching staff struggled to hold Cal Poly’s bats in check, the offense had a standout performance, led by Medina who went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and six RBIs. Stuart Smith and Jeremy Rodriguez had three hits each, while Smith, McIntyre, Gaston and Sanchez all drove in a pair of runs.
Freshman Brandon Van Dam earned his first start of the year for the ‘Runners, a no-decision after recorded five strikeouts, six walks, four hits and nine runs (seven earned) in 3 2/3 innings. Junior lefty Sam Jones (0-3) took the loss after surrendering seven runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk.
DeVincenzi (2-0) was credited with the win for Cal Poly and Massingham earned his second save of the season. Dorrell had three hits to lead the Mustangs and Yoder drove home a team-best four runs.
Bakersfield returns to action Friday, Mar. 27 at 6:05 p.m., beginning a three-game series at San Jose State.
