BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Freshman hurler Jonathan Montoya held No. 16 Cal Poly to just one hit and no runs for 4 1/3 innings, but the Mustang offense broke through in the second half of the game, claiming a 10-2 win over the CSUB baseball team Sunday at Hardt Field.

Montoya (2-1) allowed just five baserunners through the opening four innings, including two on walks, two on hit-by-pitch and one on a single to center. The southpaw recorded his fourth strikeout of the game to earn the first out in the fifth before Kyle Smith singled up the middle. Smith worked his way around the bases, stealing both second and third, before a Ryan Lee single through the left side sent Smith home.

After another strikeout by Montoya, Matt Jensen drew a walk, putting runners on first and third for D.J. Gentile who sent a long double into left field, plating Lee and Jensen. Montoya then recorded his sixth strikeout to end the inning with Cal Poly up 3-0.

With one out in the sixth, CSUB’s Brandon Boren singled through the right side. Kyle Richardson flew out to the shortstop, but Ryan McIntyre grounder down the right line, drew a fielding error by first baseman Buschini, allowing Boren to advance to third. With Stuart Smith at bat, Boren scored on a passed ball, but the Roadrunners were unable to add any more runs as Smith ended the inning with a strikeout.

Cal Poly (14-4) pushed the lead to 4-1 with a Jensen RBI-single in the seventh, plating Kyle Smith who had led off the inning with a walk.

Bakersfield (4-13) looked to counter in the bottom of the inning when singles by Jeremy Rodriguez and Derek Geisinger put runners on first and third for Richard Escalera, but the designated hitter grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Mustangs put the game out of reach in the eighth and ninth, scoring a trio of runs in each inning to go up 10-1 before the Roadrunners added one final run in the bottom of the ninth for the final balance. RBI hits by Lee and Jensen accounted for the runs in the eighth and a three-run homer by Ross Brayton accounted for the ninth-inning runs.

A one-out single by Martin Medina, a double to left-center by Geisinger and a single through the right side by Escalera gave Bakersfield its lone run in the ninth.

Montoya pitched seven complete innings and faced one batter in the eighth, finishing with seven strikeouts to go with six walks, six hits and four earned runs. Spenser Messmore pitched two innings of relief, striking out one while allowing five hits and five earned runs.

Cal Poly’s starter DJ Mauldin (3-1) struck out six and scattered six hits with no walks in eight complete innings. Mark DeVincenzi tossed the final inning, giving up three hits and one run.

Bakersfield had nine total hits, including a pair of Geisinger, while the Mustangs recorded 11 hits, let by Lee’s 3-for-5 performance.

The Roadrunners and Mustangs conclude their four-game series Monday at 2 p.m. at Hardt Field.
